In NetWorx, you can choose between bits and bytes by selecting your preferred Transfer rate unit in the Graph Settings. For example, if one ISP offered 10 MB/s, while another ISP advertised their speed as 80 Mb/s, which one would most people choose? It may look like the second provider offers a much faster service, but in fact their speeds are identical. In this confusing situation, Internet service providers prefer using the higher, best-looking number in their marketing. These units are now used with IEC binary prefixes: KiB (pronounced “kibibyte”), MiB (mebibyte) and GiB (gibibyte). The difference between a gigabyte (GB) and a gigabit (Gb) is the same: a gigabyte is 8 times larger than a gigabit.Īn additional complication comes from the fact that file size is typically measured in binary system, which used to refer to kilobyte as 2 10 = 1024 bytes, megabyte as 1024 2 bytes, and gigabyte as 1024 3 bytes. This is not the case, because one byte contains eight bits, thus making a megabyte 8 times the size of a megabit so to download 1 MB in 1 second you need a connection speed of 8 Mbps. People often incorrectly assume that a speed of 1 Mbps will allow them to download 1 MB in 1 second. megabit (Mb) or megabit per second (Mbps, Mb/s), with a small or lowercase ‘b’, a data-rate unit used for download speeds advertised by ISPs and reported by on-line tools, equal to 1000 2 bits (b). In this oil painting, we can visibly see the horizon line, where the sky meets the sea. This style has often been described in terms of echoing the natural American Midwest landscape and Wright is often quoted as describing these buildings as “married to the ground”.Īnother example of line in art depicting horizontality is “The Monk by the Sea” (1808 to 1810) by Caspar David Friedrich. This is an example from the Chicago-born architectural style called the Prairie Style, of which the renowned Wright was a part. The Monk by the Sea (1808 – 1810) by Caspar David Friedrich, located in the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin, Germany Caspar David Friedrich, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons Robie House (1909) designed by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Think of a time when you needed to choose this type of format for a photo frame.Įxamples of line in art that depict horizontality can be seen in architectural structures which will appear sturdier, like the Frederick C. This can be in a horizontal format or orientation, which is termed a “landscape” orientation compared to the “portrait” orientation, which is vertical. The implied horizontal format can also relate to the physical nature of an artwork, in other words, its form. This leads to implied horizontal lines that we cannot visibly see as a line itself. We can either visibly see horizontal lines in artworks, which are typically straight lines, but not always some horizontal lines can be curvier, but imply horizontality. Robie House, built by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1909 Teemu08, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons In other words, parallel lines (orthogonals) converge at a focal or vanishing point on the horizon line in the visual composition. They can also convey distance and space through linear perspective, which creates depth and three-dimensionality in a two-dimensional (flat) visual composition like a canvas or piece of paper. Horizontal lines are often attributed to qualities like restfulness, calmness, solidity, or steadiness because it lies in line with the earth. They are usually described as being straight lines that are “flat” and “parallel” to the earth’s horizon, which is the line we see when the sky meets the earth or where the sky meets the ocean. Horizontal lines move from left to right, or right to left, in other words across. We will discuss these in more detail below. It is also important to note that any type of line can be short or long, thick, or thin. Line in art comes in different lengths, shapes, and sizes, for example, curved, zigzag, spiral, wavy, horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and more. Now that we have a bit of context around where line as an element of art fits, what is a line in art all about and how does it make a difference to an artwork? Below we will discuss the several main types of lines and what they look like. There can be numerous art principles at play in one artwork. ![]() Furthermore, these would also create a sense of unity of the overall artwork. For example, lines would be applied in repetitions or patterns to emphasize speed. If the goal is to create an artwork to convey speed, the art principles of rhythm and movement will direct how the elements of art are applied. They are also like formal art tools, however, they can function as the organizing principles around how to apply the elements of art. Some of the main principles of art are unity, harmony, contrast, variety, repetition, rhythm, movement, pattern, proportion, scale, balance, and emphasis. Together with the principles of art, otherwise also referred to as the principles of design, they can create almost hundreds of different effects in a piece of art. The elements of art can be applied in unison or isolated for specific purposes. These are formal art tools that are applied to create a visual art composition and can span across all fine arts like sculptures, drawings, paintings, photography, graphic arts, as well as architecture, and even interior design. Line in art comprises one of the seven most known elements of art, the other six being form, shape, value, color, texture, and space. ![]() Before we look at the types of lines in art let us contextualize them within a larger scope of the elements and principles of art. Sometimes we see lines clearly and sometimes we do not, but they are there. 5/7/2023 0 Comments Tooltip windows grid![]() JavaScript has one more predefined way to get a ToolTip feature. toggle: Display the tooltip text by clicking the text-without opening it.classList: Makes us access HTML class names.Syntax: var variableName = document.getElementById("id") In JavaScript predefined function to get Tooltip feature. As you know mobile devices do not have a mouse so there is no cursor so, this tooltip feature is not available. It saves a lot of initial space to the customer to show more items within less space. But if we hover the cursor on to it, we will see some text about the item. We don’t have enough space to display what is the item exactly. For example, in Flipkart, so many product items are there. In a real-time scenario, space plays a vital role in dealing with items. For more information on the possibilities it offers, I’d recommend this talk by Luke Westby at Elm Europe 2018. Thankfully, we found an alternative solutions with using custom elements inside Elm, which allows for the associated JS to work just as expected. In the case of an Elm app, we could handle that with ports. Making a tooltip responsive to the browser’s viewport can be tricky in this context. The downside of having an embedded app using the virtual DOM on a webpage is that it doesn’t have direct access to the Window object. At carwow we use Elm when we need state management in parts of the website with high client-side interactivity. Being able to use a UI pattern just by adding a custom HTML element on a page and not having to worry about invoking any JS code manually is pretty neat.Īn event stronger argument in favour of web components was how they interact with the virtual DOM. Web components were a great candidate to build tooltips for their ease of use as part of a design systems. I don’t expect that situation to be problematic enough to introduce more JS code to resolve it programmatically. Users can still adjust it by scrolling down the page, so the content can be viewed. The only remaining situation where the tooltip could go off-screen is if the element is located at the bottom of the page when the user taps on it. In a situation where the label is placed at the left or right end of the screen, the tooltip’s dropdown will be fixed to the side of the website’s grid. That switches the display property of the dropdown to block and trigger a CSS animation for a swift fade-in effect. To open the tooltip, we use a class with a modifier (following BEM) tooltip-open. The idea is to set the container with position: relative while the dropdown has a position: absolute and we can use a combination of left: 50% and transform: translateX(-50%) to have the tooltip at the horizontal centre of the label. The CSS needed for this approach is minimal. If you do need to support legacy browsers such as Internet Explorer, don’t be scared by its lack of support for the media feature, you can use Browserhacks to specifically target certain browsers your audience rely on. Other devices will rely on JS and touch events instead. To make things easier, I chose to use a CSS media feature so that only devices that support hovering elements will handle opening/closing tooltips via CSS. Handling CSS hover events on touchscreens can be tricky as browsers will interpret them differently. The drawback with this approach is that we need a different behaviour on touch screens, where users would expect to be able to dismiss a tooltip either by tapping the label a second time or by tapping away anywhere on the screen. ![]() ![]() We can easily build a tooltip for desktop screens using the :hover pseudo-class. My initial idea is to take advantage of CSS as much as possible. It does also block-level backup so it detects which portions of the file have changed making backups and uploads. Also, it supports multiple file versions so whenever you change your files it stores the previous version of that file. You can choose whether you want to backup in advanced mode which enables encryption of your files which I highly recommended. We want to make clear that we are backing up. We’re going to select for this example photos and then you can specify whether you want to execute the photos backup plan regardless of the backup result or only if the backup has been successfully completed. After that, you can select the plan you want to be triggered right, after this plan is being executed. The plan that is being created will be executed so you can select the backup chain checkbox. We take things further and enable you to select a plan that will be executed right after. Setting up an account performing consistency. You can perform any common line operations that our software supports such as: Now, as you know, cloudberry backup already allows you to automate your pre backup and post back up actions. The next feature we’re going to talk about is what we call backup chain. That way you have to utilize half as many disk operations on your main computer, which is very neat so to set up a hybrid backup plan. Then, they are uploaded from your local storage from presumably enough storage all the way to the cloud storage. They’re being encrypted once and then once they’re compressed encrypted and copied to your local storage. Your files are being copied to your local storage, they are being compressed once. Now, you don’t have to perform all those operations twice. Because the files are being copied from your main computer to the local storage, then from your main computer to the cloud storage with hybrid backup. Of course, that is not very efficient, you have to perform encryption twice. One to the local storage and one to the cloud storage. ![]() Our resource usually choose to set up two different backup plans. If you follow the industry standards, you know that you have to perform at least one local and one cloud backup. You can just restore and get all your data back! Hybrid backup It basically gives you a warning, so that you don’t end up deleting your previous backups. If ransomware ends up encrypting the data on your system when you run the next backup, cloudberry will actually tell you that hey look at your files they’ve been encrypted. Keep in mind, this is ransomware protection for your backups, not for your system. However, I was recently approached by cloudberry backup, a backup utility that works with all sorts of cloud services. Therefore, it does not help if it’s connected to your system. The main reason for that is if the ransomware does encrypt your data then your backups may also get encrypted. Usually, I’m not a big fan of automated scheduled backup programs. I cannot get VMware 12 to install and run on Catalina.Ģ. I have not tried to run Big Sur on a working Catalina/VMWare 11 machine as the trip back to a working system is time consuming if it does not work.Īs pointed out by another poster, I have two issues:ġ. I believe that there is a new release of 12 (12.1.0 ?) which fixes the Ethernet0 issue (this prevents a network connection device being mounted) so you should be able to get a network connection. ![]() If you use Big Sur as the host, then VMWare 12 is the only solution, only it does not work for me. ![]() However I suspect there are bugs on both sides (VMWare and Apple) here. VMWare 11 will not work on Big Sur, period (as far as I can tell) since Big Sur does not support Kernel Extensions and relies on Apple's Drive Kit which are a series of APIs that are supposed to give the same function as the Kernel Extensions in Catalina. I might as well keep it on VMWare 11 on Catalina.Īgain appreciate your suggestions and help. Since the machine I currently use for VMs is on Catalina, it is not really practical to upgrade to Big Sur and then try the process again, since, if it failed, I would have to go back to Catalina which takes several hours. My network settings are very standard, Bridge, Auto. Time to re-setup my desktop PC again I suspect.Ģ. I repeated the process as you suggested and nothing changed. I never saw the prompts to install the extensions and, as a result, the VMs would not run. I had the security option unlocked and open on my desktop and installed VMWare. I even hunted down the library entries for VMWare and deleted them before reinstalling. I assumed the broken pipes issue was due to incorrect installation, so I have already been through your suggested process (I noted that I had had the same issue with OWCs Softraid when it tried to install extensions and I had to unlock the security options in System Preferences in order to get it to prompt to install the extensions). Thanks in anticipation of some help and guidance.ġ. If someone can give me any guidance I would be grateful meanwhile I am sticking with Catalina and VMware 11 for the moment. I am assuming it is to do with the fact VMWare does not use KEXTs in Big Sur but uses Apples Drive Kit and there are bugs somewhere in the new code for the new APIs, although your blog indicates that, in Catalina, you still use kernel extensions, so that does not explain the Catalina/VMware 12 failure I am observing, but might explain the Big Sur issues where Apple's Drivekit APIs have to be used. There is obviously a fundamental problem here. I reverted to Catalina (with much pain), put back VMWare 11.5.6 and used backups of the VMs and all is well. At least I did not get the broken pipes message but the VMs were not much use to me. With these 3 VMs the MS Update server could not be reached, my email client in the browser would not load, the Baraccuda VPN adapter did not work etc. I run all my VMs in Bridge Auto mode, so each VMW has its own IP address. The other 3 VMs came up and ran with networking apparently connecting but I discovered that NAT was not working. The VM ran fine, but with no network connection. 1 of them came up with the 'Ethernet0 could not be loaded so networking was disabled' type message so there was no virtual network adapter. I upgraded to Big Sur on one of my Macs and, of course, you need to install VMWare 12 in order to get the VMs to have any chance of running. Has anyone else had these issues and if so what can be done to make it work.Ģ. So it looks as if VMWare 12 would not work for me on Catalina. The VMs were upgraded and then would not start due to 'broken pipes'. Checked everything was working and did the upgrade to VMWare 12 again. I assumed that an issue I had with OWC's Softraid where I had to unlock the security options prior to doing the upgrade (to allow extensions to be installed), may be the problem, so I put backup copies of VMs back and reinstalled VMWare 11.5.6. ![]() I upgraded to VM12 (Player edition) and immediately had issues with 'broken pipes' messages and the VMs refused to start after VMWare 'upgraded' the VMs. I have 4 VMs all working well on VMWare 11.5.6 (standard edition) and OS X 10.15.7. I have been on the trail of several issue and have posted in the general forum but thought I would post here and see what the team has to say.ġ. 5/7/2023 0 Comments Chimpanzee strength vs human![]() Next, the researchers wanted to understand how a chimp’s relationship to the alpha male underpinned male reproductive success. In fact, two additional strong association ties meant a male chimpanzee was more than 50% more likely to sire a given offspring, after accounting for the chimp’s age, relation to the mother and dominance rank score. They found that males with more strong association ties-males with the highest number of social bonds with other males-had a higher likelihood of siring offspring. Then, they tested whether adding measures of male social bonds to the models improved their ability to predict which male would sire a given offspring. They first used the model to look at 56 siring events with known paternity between 19. The researchers began by constructing a base model that captures the effects of male age, dominance rank and genetic relatedness to the mother on male siring success. The group is part of the ongoing study of chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park, begun by Jane Goodall in 1960. To examine the link between sociality and paternity success, the researchers examined behavioral and genetic data from a population of chimpanzees living in western Tanzania. One function of these social bonds, the researchers found, is to help males gain access to mating opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise be able to get without help from their friends. “The question is: What do males get out of it and how?” “Chimps cooperate frequently, and often in these very dramatic ways: You see things like grooming, all kinds of complex alliance formation and group territorial defense,” Feldblum said. For males, the biggest task is getting reproductive access to females, says Feldblum, also an assistant professor in the U-M Department of Anthropology and member of the Michigan Society of Fellows. Much of the research in this area has been done in female primates, who are primarily concerned with accessing resources in order to reproduce quickly. One benefit would be the opportunity to sire more offspring, but no previous studies have looked at the link between social relationships and reproductive success in chimpanzees. Males wouldn’t spend all this time grooming other males and forgoing trying to find females or food unless you get some kind of benefit from it.” “One would expect to see these social bonds-or strong, friendly social relationships-only if they provide some sort of fitness benefit to the individuals. “One big question that biologists have had for a long time is why you see so many friendly behaviors such as cooperation and alliance in animals,” said lead study author and U-M postdoctoral researcher Joseph Feldblum. 5/7/2023 0 Comments Will palworld be free![]() Palworld is scheduled to enter Steam Early Access in 2022. 8 Palworld Developer: Pocketpair Publisher: Pocketpair Platform: PC Release: 2022 Palworld is an open-world survival crafting game similar to Pokemon in the sense that you collect creatures to.
